Asaduddin Owaisi: Making India an all-Hindu nation by 2021 was a dream that cannot see the light of day.
Beed:
Two days after his statement created a furore, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi was in Beed Tuesday, attending a rally of his party and explaining his statement, peppering the whole issue with some humour.
Owaisi, attending an AIMIM rally for reservation of Muslims in education and jobs, used the platform to explain that like every citizen, he had the right to speak what he believed was the truth, and it was guaranteed by the Constitution. He had said, “All are born Muslims, and are converted later.” It was an apparent bid to counter the “ghar wapsi” (homecoming) campaign of some Hindu organisations to “reconvert” people from other faiths claiming all Indians were Hindus and many of them were converted to other faiths in course of time.
Owaisi also said making India an all-Hindu nation by 2021 was a dream that cannot see the light of day. Several right-wing Hindu outfits had lashed out at Owaisi for his statement, and he had attracted the ire of some Muslim organisations for what they perceived were irresponsible statements that had the potential of fomenting communal hatred.
Owaisi said he believed in purity of Islam and was right in saying that everyone is born Muslim — arguing that every child is born pure — and gets converted to other religions later.
“I believe what I said is the truth. It is in the Quran and Hadees… Indian Constitution gives me the right to practise and preach my religion. All said and done, it has also been proved that the media loves me. For the last two days, I was there on each and every channel. I got so much attention, I felt as if I was a newly wed groom,” said Owaisi. He was, however, serious in his attack on Hindu hardliners saying their attempts of ‘ghar wapsi’ were going to fail and no Muslim would ever abandon his faith for Rs 5 lakh. “I pity those who think a Muslim will convert (to other religions) for Rs 5 lakh. There are those who dream of making India an entirely Hindu country by 2021. It’s not going to happen. It’s not going to happen by 2021. It is not going to happen by 2090 or till Qayyamat (Judgement Day)… Our ancestors paid for freedom of this country with their lives. We are here to stay and will demand what is our right,” said the AIMIM chief. He said those who brand his party as communal were doing so because they were afraid of its growing clout.
