Veena Malik Has Been Sentenced To 26 Years In Prison.

Actress Veena Malik might go to jail for 26 years because she acted in a blasphemous programme on Pakistani channel Geo TV. The programme saw the mock marriage of Malik with her real-life husband Asad Bashir Khan Khattak, with a religious song playing in the background. This is considered blasphemy according to Pakistan’s laws.
The morning programme, which was aired to celebrate the wedding of Pakistani film and TV actress Veena Malik had generated criticism across Pakistan, and people registered blasphemy cases against them across Pakistani cities, including Karachi and Islamabad.

While the channel apologized through English and Urdu newspapers and TV, it wasn’t enough. The owner of the channel, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, as well as TV host Shaista Wahidi have also been charged. A fine of 1.3 million Pakistani rupees has been imposed on the four, and the court judgment mentioned that they had committed profanity.

Social isolation, stigma plague Zia Ul Haq’s kin.

After three days, Zia-ul-Haq's family read in newspapers that he was a “terrorist”, who had planted explosives at the Odeon Theatre at RTC crossroads.

Hyderabad:
Four-year-old Madhia Anjum was not born when Hyderabad police had picked up her father Zia Ul Haq from his house at idi Bazaar. Cops, who came to detain his brother alleging that he misbehaved with a woman, took Haq along with them. However, after three days, the family read in the newspapers that Haq was a “terrorist”, who had planted explosives at the Odeon Theatre at RTC crossroads.
Little Madhia has now started going to kindergarten, she or her two elder brothers, who studies in lower primary school, still do not know why her father has to be inside a prison. As a local court has acquitted Haq from the bomb blast case, his distressed family now hopes that he will come out clean in the second case, an arms recovery case, in the higher court.
He was convicted in the case and sentenced to seven years by the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in January this year. With the acquittal in the blast case, his family believes that his innocence will be proven in the higher court. “Our lives have been miserable after his arrest. We were socially isolated, and the stigma even haunted my little kids. We had to move to my brother’s house since my husband was not there to look after us,” said a teary eyed Ms Amina Fatima, Haq’s wife.
Haq was arrested just three and a half years after their marriage. They were blessed with two boys, and Ms Amina was pregnant when the police came to detain Haq. “In the school, when other students’ fathers come to pick them up, my kids would ask where was their father. I had to lie till recently. I would say he had gone to stay in his native town. When they started understanding things I started taking them to jail to meet their father. Since he was lodged in the Warangal prison, that was also a hard task,” added Haq’s wife Ms Amina Fatima.
Haq’s family members say that the allegations of the police and the National Investigation Agency were cooked up. The police had not found any weapons or explosive from his house, and the entire evidence were planted. They also said that that the allegations of Haq being trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba was a concocted story. Haq was a cab driver in the city and had married in 2007. The NIA had claimed that they had intercepted a phone call between Haq and a Pakistani national, and they were planning to carry out more terror attacks in the country.

Zia Ul Haq case: Lack of evidence dents trial.

Hyderabad police chief A K Khan shows photo of LeT operative Mohd Zia ul Haq.

Hyderabad:
It has become commonplace for suspects arrested and chargesheeted in major cases by the city police and the National Investigation Agency from Hyderabad to be acquitted by the courts.
Investigation agencies often can’t furnish evidence during the trial and the prosecution fails to get a conviction. After the Mecca Masjid blasts case took a complete U turn with all the youngsters arrested being acquitted by the court, two youngsters were acquitted in the case of attacking the  Gujarat police. Now, Zia Ul Haq has been acquitted in the Odeon theatre blast case.
Human rights activists say that when investigation agencies proceed with communal biases, such failure is inevitable. However, the prosecution and the police say that sometimes the unavailability of crime scene evidences and witnesses lead to this situation. The prosecution sometimes fail to link the available evidences with the offence because of various reasons, say senior police officials.
Advocate and civil liberties activist V Raghunath said, “Some of those cases were politically motivated to show a particular community as terrorists, and investigation agencies failed to produce evidence for the charges they framed. The government should look into these aspects,” he said.
Prominent advocates say that proceeding with weak evidences on major cases is a waste of time and resources of the judiciary. Senior advocate and human rights activist Shafeeq-ur-Rahman Muhajir said that it is not just one acquittal, but a series of acquittals that are being seen. “The investigation agencies and public prosecution are equally responsible for framing charges when the evidences are not enough to sustain the allegations. They are wasting the time and resources of the judiciary,” he said.
Meanwhile, senior police officials from the city say that it does not necessarily prove that the allegations are false or concocted. “When the cases are detected and the accused is arrested many years after the case, it’s not easy to access crime scene evidences. It’s also very difficult to link the available evidences with the offence and the offender. When the evidences are not convincing enough, the framed charges are not approved by the court,” said a senior police official from Hyderabad police.
Officials said that in the Zia Ul Haq case, the Hyderabad police and prosecution would study the judgment and analyse on what grounds the acquittal had been granted. “We will seek legal opinion and will decide whether we should proceed to the higher court with an appeal,” a police official said.

Suspect tag haunts victims of the Mecca Majsid blast in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad:
Mecca Masjid Blast
Dr Ibrahim Ali Junaid was a medical student when he was charged as a terror accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case. Even after he has been given a clean chit including a compensation and a character certificate by the government, cops still haunt Junaid and his family whenever needed.
“I run a clinic, and everybody including the government know I was falsely implicated in the terror cases, for which I was given a compensation along with a character certificate,” says Dr Junaid. “But the police harassment is for ever; I am called by investigation agencies whenever something wrong happens in the city, including festivals and elections, as part of bound over cases, my family suffered equally as I did.” he added.
Meanwhile  Syed Imran, working on contract basis with a private firm is still victimised for being labeled as a terrorist. He was in jail for 18 months for doing nothing; after being acquitted in the Mecca Masjid case, another case of having a fake passport was slapped on him. He has now been cleared of all the cases.
He is ready to work as a police constable though he is an engineering graduate. He feels it is the only way he can prove his innocence as policemen keep knocking on his door whenever terror incidents are reported.
“I will be in front of police officers all the time if I am given a job in the department. They can then monitor me round-the-clock instead of calling and questioning every time terrorists strike somewhere,” says the engineer working with a private firm.

The same is the story of his uncle Mr Shoeb Jagirdar, who was booked with similar charges along with Mr Imran, and was later acquitted by the courts.

Telangana to protest Karnataka's Tungabhadra river dam proposal in Delhi.

A file photo of a dam built over Tungabhadra river in Karnataka.
Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to complaint to the Centre about Karnataka’s decision to build the Tungabhadra dam. “We will lodge a complaint  with the Central government as well as the Krishna River Management Board constituted recently by the Central government,” said Telangana irrigation minister T Harish Rao.
The minister held discussions with engineering officials and ordered them to file a complaint immediately with the Centre. “We cannot keep quiet if the upper riparian state does whatever it want with a jointly operated project.
Anyways, we are yet to hear the proposal from Karnataka, we only saw the news reports on the minister’s announcement. We will raise the issue in the Tungabhadra Dam Board meeting which is scheduled for November 29,” said B. Adityanadh Das, principal secretary irrigation government of Andhra Pradesh.
“This is not an ordinary issue, we were not getting sufficient quota flows from the Tungabhadra Dam to our canals all these years, if they want to construct another dam upstream of Hospet Dam, the water will first fill up the new dam and only then reach the Tungabhadra Old Dam.
This means normal inflows into Srisailam Dam will be affected. It will have a cascading effect on all the irrigation systems in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which are highly dependent on the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams,” said  C Muralidhar, engineering-in-chief, Government of Telangana.

Telangana to form 2 more House Committees to probe land issues.

The government had on Thursday agreed to constitute a House Committee to probe the various land issues, including those belonging to Wakf, endowments and churches.
Hyderabad:
The Telangana government on Thursday agreed to constitute two more Legislative House Committees to probe irregularities in various housing societies and to look into Wakf properties across the state.
The government had on Thursday agreed to constitute a House Committee to probe the various land issues, including those belonging to Wakf, endowments and churches.
However, on a plea made by Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Akbaruddin Owaisi in the Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced that a separate House Committee would be constituted to look into Wakf land.
The issue came up for discussion in the Assembly on Thursday through a Call Attention Motion moved by Akbaruddin and four other MLAs into the irregularities in the Jubilee Hills and Film Nagar Housing Societies and the Wakf land involved.
Akbaruddin said various inquiries conducted by government agencies clearly established that large-scale irregularities were committed by the societies over the last many years.
"But the previous governments shielded the guilty and no action was taken against them. I demand that the present government immediately scrap those societies and appoint special officers," the MIM Legislature Party leader said and demanded a judicial probe into the societies' affairs.
Legislators belonging to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti wanted a House Committee to probe the societies' irregularities and bring the guilty to book.
Responding to this, the Chief Minister said "80 bundles of files" on these were available with the government.
"There were numerous probes into the societies' affairs. Lots of irregularities were found. What should we do now is the question," he said.
He agreed to the constitution of a House Committee to probe the housing societies' affairs. Congress leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka wanted the House Committee to also probe the irregularities in the Telangana Non-Gazetted Officers' Housing Society.
The Chief Minister said there was no objection, but added that the affairs of all housing societies in the 10 districts of Telangana would also be probed by the Committee.
The government was concerned over Wakf properties, he said, adding that all steps would be taken to probe them.
A Joint Legislature Committee, comprising members of the Legislative Council and the Assembly, would look into the Wakf land issue, he said.
The government would soon appoint a judge for the Wakf.

As per the suggestion by Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, the government has also asked the developer to change the entire alignment of the metro rail in the old city of Hyderabad. MIM floor leader in assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi, who attended the meeting, said the re- alignment was necessary to save many religious structures.

As per the original alignment, the metro will pass through Darulshifa, Mir Alam Mandi, Etebar Chowk, Moghalpura and other densely populated and historic areas. MIM has mooted alternate route along Musi River, Bahadurpura, and Kalapathar to join Falaknuma.
