Expats pay tribute to Sir Syed.

REMEMBERING A LEGEND: Guests and organizers at the AMU event in Riyadh.
Riyadh:
Finding salvation in quality education for underprivileged sections in society will be a glowing tribute to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the visionary who laid the foundation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), said Indian leaders speaking at Sir Syed Day function in Riyadh.
Organized by the Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association (AMUOBA) in memory of the great educator, the event was attended by Indian political bigwigs and high-ranking members of the judiciary, as well as large number of prominent expats.

Addressing the audience, Justice MSA Siddiqui, chairman of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions in India, said that the most important contribution of Sir Syed was to show the right path to the Muslim community, specially the underprivileged sections of society and to guide them to empowerment with quality-based higher education.

“It is imperative for us as educated members of the community to respond to the call of the great visionary leader to come forward to empower the poor sections,” he said.
Siddiqui, who is also a retired judge of the Supreme Court, said: “Our salvation lies in quality education for the less privileged and poor sections in the community.

He advised that while working in pursuit of this goal there should be no confrontation between religious and modern education and wisdom should prevail over emotion.
Earlier, former Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, M. A. A. Fatmi, urged the members of the community to establish a “knowledge fund” which will address the concerns of the poor.

“It is the responsibility of intellectual groups to help the downtrodden sections with financial assistance and philanthropy like adopting rural hamlets in Muslim clusters or providing scholarships to brilliant students from poor families,” he said.

Presiding over the session, Asaduddin Owaisi, senior politician and president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), said there is a dire need for institutions like AMU in all parts of India, describing Sir Syed as an ardent reformer.

Nadeem Tarin, renowned Indian educationist who runs several schools in the Kingdom and India, urged the community to partake in philanthropy and contribute to the best of their ability for community development.

Earlier, Mohammad Ahmad Badshah, AMUOBA president, welcomed the guests; Nasim Akhtar, vice president, proposed vote of thanks; while Taqiuddin Mir, general secretary, moderated the event.
