Hyderabad:
MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi on Tuesday demanded that the government keep a strict vigil to curb over-the-counter sales in the city of addictive medicines like cough syrup and whitener. He said he was alarmed at the rising menace of dru
g peddling in the Old City.

"The drug peddlers are roaming free in the city as there is no check on them. Young people are falling prey to the drug mafia and the consumption of whiteners and cough syrup is rising alarmingly," Owaisi said during the zero hour in the assembly.

As he sought to bring the fact that the addictive drugs were freely available in the medical stores and elsewhere to the government's notice, Owaisi demanded that the government enact a strict law and step up vigil to stop the sales of cough syrup without doctor's prescription.

Responding positively, deputy chief minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali assured that the government would take all required steps.
