Hyderabad:
For lakhs of commuters regularly plying on the AOC
roads, the New Year is all set to turn nightmarish in the form of huge
traffic congestions. Marking the onset of its second phase of blockades
in the Secunderabad Cantonment area, the Army has formally communicated
that it will close down two stretches, Gough road and Wellington road,
from January 1, 2015.
In a letter addressed to the
Residents Welfare Association and dated Monday, December 8, AOC Battalion Commander Col. Deven Bharadwaj subtly conveyed that they will
go ahead with the blockade since the government departments concerned
had failed to develop alternate routes.
“Even after
passage of nearly two and a half months from the judgment and nearly 10
months of announcing our intent of imposing restrictions on civil traffic, no formal proposal of assistance required from the Army for
making alternate arrangements for civil traffic has been received from
GHMC or any other State government agency,” the statement said.
The
Army explained that the deteriorating internal security situation and
other functional difficulties were some of the reasons for this
decision. However, it was communicated that day-time passage will be
allowed for civilians on Ordnance Road coming from Safilguda and
Entrenchment Road leading to East Marredpally for “some more time”.
The communication has upset the RWAs who blame the GHMC and public representatives for the present situation.
“We
have tried our best in making GHMC contact the Army for requesting
alternate routes through AOC for civil traffic. But the GHMC authorities
have always dodged the matter by saying that the survey was ongoing
without giving any information on the outcome,” said B.T. Srinivasan,
executive VP, United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations.
“We
are seriously concerned about the Army imposing further traffic
restrictions. It looks like GHMC is not bothered about the Malkajgiri
citizen’s traffic woes due to the Army restrictions.” The RWAs have
decided to step up pressure on the TS government to intervene and stop
Army blockades till alternate routes are developed.
