Kashmir bloodbath blow to peace.

Indian defence personnel gather near the scene of a gunfight with suspected rebels on the outskirts of Srinagar on Friday.
Srinagar:
Just two days ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Kashmir witnessed a bloody day Friday that left 21 persons including 11 security men dead.
In an audacious pre-dawn attack, a group of heavily armed militants stormed an Indian Army base at Mahura, 85 km from Srinagar near the Line of Control.
Police said the militants opened fire with automatic weapons at the army camp, triggering a gunfight that ended late in the afternoon.
“The gunfight has ended. Eight army soldiers including a lieutenant colonel and three cops were killed,” a police officer said.
A defense spokesman said the encounter lasted just over six hours. “In the ensuing firefight, all six foreign terrorists were eliminated. A huge quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from them,” he said.
Two rebels died in a gun battle in the residential outskirts of Srinagar, the flashpoint region’s main city.
In Tral, south of Srinagar, a grenade lobbed at an election campaign vehicle missed its target and killed an elderly bystander at a bus stop, injuring six others.
The bloodbath has dealt a massive blow to peace efforts between India and Pakistan, said analysts.
The violence comes ahead of a campaign visit Monday by Modi, whose Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party is making a bid for power in Kashmir.
Modi will address a campaign rally for the BJP, which is staging a bold attempt to seize control of the Jammu and Kashmir legislature — a move unthinkable until very recently.
The Hindu nationalist party has traditionally had no base in the Kashmir Valley, where local resentment against Indian rule runs high.
