All-Party Meet. |
The State government’s decision to change the alignment of the Hyderabad Metro Rail in the Old City has evoked mixed reactions from political parties at the all-party meeting held here Tuesday. While the MIM was all for the alternate route along the Musi river to Falaknuma, the BJP made it clear it won’t allow the same. Consensus, though, was achieved on the proposed changes in alignment at two other places.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and HMR officials explained to the parties, with the help of maps, disadvantages of the present alignment and advantages of the proposed changes. KCR will hold yet another all-party meeting on Dec 16 before taking a final decision.
At the four-long meeting, BJP leader G Kishan Reddy argued that the government intention to take metro rail along the Musi river connecting the Nehru Zoological Park would help none in the Old City. “What is the use of having such a facility which runs along some canals and isolated places? Especially, the line along the zoo...if these changes are made, it will not be of any use to over 10 lakh people in the Old City,” he said. MIM floor leader in the Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi, however, pointed out that if not realigned, the metro rail would destroy over 1,025 structures in the Old City.
He opined the changes would offer a new transport service for the west side of the Old City. “The BJP is opposing the new route plan only because it was proposed by the MIM,” he alleged.
