Part of Moti Darwaza. |
The Moti Darwaza, one of the imposing main gateways to the historic Golconda Fort, collapsed early on Wednesday. The 24-feet high gate came crashing down on account of lack of preservation for decades which eventually led to the decay of teak wood gate.
"Wear and tear caused the door to fall. Further, re-carpeting of roads resulted in a mismatch of contours. There is no room to move the door on its hinges," said Golconda conservation assistant Sambasiva Rao.
Sources said that Golconda's descent into decadence is a result of multiple agencies controlling different parts of the fort, but none taking responsibility for its upkeep. For instance, ASI, the archaeology behemoth, has in its purview the outer fort wall. The maintenance of the eight gateways and 49 burjs (towers), most of which are crumbling, is also the job of ASI. It also controls 54 acres of moats, 41 acres of Bala Hisaar and eight acres of the Katora Houz. "Moats have been filled, walls are crumbling and encroachments are a rampant feature," said a source, requesting anonymity.
